I have a firm opinion on the war on terror subduing Americans into thinking their rights should be tampered with. With the recent emergence of the NSA documents provided by Mr. Snowden, it's increasingly clear that that coupled with the Patriot Act tramples on our basic rights provided by the Bill of Rights. Plenty of people have said "I have nothing to hide" but that's not the point. It's the mere fact that they're sorting through your stuff which is repulsive and deplorable. 

Gay marriage is becoming a lesser controversial topic as more and more states move to legalize and now the majority of Americans support such a movement. It is clear that for the fundamental right of equality in the financial system (Taxes, insurance, etc) that gay marriage needs to be legalized. New Jersey is the most recent state and the Republican Governor already said he won't be moving forward with a case disputing the verdict - which is a sign of progress considering most of the opposition to gay marriage falls into the far-right/conservative republican party. 

Another hot-button issue is the problem of Universal Healthcare as 'Obamacare' was recently deployed across the 50 states. Of course, anyone with any rational knows 'Obamacare' is not Universal Healthcare (at least nothing like the National Healthcare Service or any other comparable services provided throughout Europe) but it is a step forward for universal coverage. It's quite evident that single-payer healthcare systems work quite well compared to their counterparts (where millions are uninsured and get stuck in debt due to increasing medical costs).
